‘Pursue Your Dreams’:
Some Context
In the moments following Rory McIlroy’s epic first (who knows?) Masters win, his overarching message and theme was that he had finally reached a long held dream.
He tells his daughter to pursue her dreams no matter what.
He tells any kids watching that they need to keep believing.
He reiterates it and spells out his formula.
And, he understands, in that point in time, he has the opportunity to use his monumental golf and sporting achievement, as universal symbol for anyone paying attention
‘Pursue Your Dreams’:
Rory’s Message in a Nutshell
- Believe in your dreams.
- Put in the effort that’s required to make that a reality.
- Don’t give up when it gets tough. Keep working hard at it.
- If you do that, anything is possible.
‘Pursue Your Dreams’:
Our Best Practices’ Takeaways
This kind of dream, ‘a cherished aspiration, ambition, or ideal;’ is what Rory is talking about.
And one of the key reasons he gets there, is that he realises at a young age – he talked about it, at least publicly, at the age of 9 – and as he matured, that it is a dream he can realise.
First he realises it and then he actually realises it!
Rory, chose a dream that absolutely matched his potential:
- One that had milestone micro-dreams along the way.
- One that teased his talent and ability and challenged him to get better and better.
- One that would be characterised throughout with ups and down.
He understood that, made himself vulnerable by declaring his dreams and direction of travel; and was then prepared to suffer losses and heartbreak to earn the right to finally arrive there.
Helping our children, friends and co-workers reach their dreams starts with framing how and why we choose our aspirations, ambitions, and ideals.
Whilst we don’t want to frame the conversations around language of the other side of the dream coin: the ‘unrealistic or self-deluding fantasy;’ we do have to be mindful of how we can ground things in reality.
We do this by breaking down those dreams in into achievable goals necessary to accomplish the grander and more pivotal aspiration.
And, quite crucially, we understand that other dreams may emerge or evolve on this journey.

What’s Next?
I would hazard a guess that Rory is setting new goals aimed at realising more dreams.
He’ll enjoy this one, but he knows the next one is on the horizon as well.
